Adhesion

CAUSES

  • Painting a surface that is damp from moisture or humidity.
  • Improper surface preparation where contaminants, oil, rust or mil scale were not removed.
  • Exposing a fresh paint film to extreme weather conditions such as ice, rain, low temperatures or high humid conditions. This can lead to an improper cure times.

SOLUTIONS

  • Remove loose paint by scraping, sandblasting or pressure wash.
  • Prime effected areas and re coat with an oil based primer and top coat.
  • Reference Product spec for proper storage and dry time handling procedures.

Blistering

CAUSES

  • Painting in direct sunlight or on a surface that is too warm.
  • Application of an oil-based or alkyd paint over a damp, wet surface.
  • Exposing of a fresh latex paint film to dew, high humidity or rain.
  • Insufficient surface preparation that stops the coatings from adhering to the substrate.

SOLUTIONS

  • Reference your product’s Spec Sheet for proper surface preparation.
  • Reference your product’s Spec Sheet for warnings regarding weather during application.
  • Reference your product’s Spec Sheet for cure and exposure time limits.
  • Sand or scrape loosened film parts. Allow any moisture to dry, prime and re coat.

Chalking

CAUSES

  • Long-term exposure to moisture and sunlight
  • Using a low-quality paint
  • Over thinning the paint or spreading it too thin
  • Not priming and sealing a porous surface

SOLUTIONS

  • Remove all chalk residue by pressure-washing or sand-blasting. A wire brush and detergent may also be used. Rinse thoroughly with a strong stream of water from a garden hose.
  • If noticeable chalk still remains, use oil based primer as the first coat of paint and finish using a high-quality topcoat.

  • Heavy and uneven application of paint.

  • Application of over thinned paint.
